Eco‑Friendly Vinayaka Chavithi

Our Vinayaka week uses clay Ganeshas, simple rituals and student leadership to teach responsibility.

Feb 6, 2026

Vinayaka Chavithi at SVHS Smartkids is observed not only as a festival, but as a meaningful learning experience for students across grades. Each year, the celebration is designed to help children understand the values behind the tradition and how those values can be practised responsibly in today’s world. Teachers introduce the story of Lord Ganesha, explain the significance of the festival, and connect it to ideas of gratitude, new beginnings, and mindful living.

A strong focus of the celebration is on choosing eco-friendly clay Ganeshas instead of plaster-of-paris idols. Students are encouraged to either make their own clay idols in class or bring clay Ganeshas from home, which are then placed together on campus during the procession. Teachers talk to students about what happens to idols immersed in lakes and ponds, and how clay dissolves naturally without harming water bodies, fish, or birds. As part of this practice, the school also donates a clay Ganesha idol every year, reinforcing the idea that small, thoughtful choices can collectively make a big difference.

The final day brings together the most awaited tradition—the laddoo auction and nimarjanam conducted within the school campus. The auction is anchored by the school Wing Heads and is open for senior students to participate, giving them an opportunity to experience planning, coordination, and responsibility in a real setting. The funds raised through the auction are donated to NGOs and also used for green projects within the campus to build further awareness about sustainability. The day concludes with nimarjanam on campus, allowing students to see the complete cycle of a responsible celebration. Through these simple yet powerful experiences, Vinayaka Chavithi becomes a lesson in culture, leadership, community spirit, and care for the environment.
