On Vasantha Panchami, each child at SVHS Smartkids writes a first letter with family beside.

On Vasantha Panchami morning, the campus settles into a quieter rhythm around the white stone Saraswati temple. By 10:00 am, parents, young children, school Heads and local guests are seated near the temple, which is decorated simply with flowers and a saree draped over the idol. Small slates and chalk are placed on a table close by, ready for Aksharabhyasam.
The local priest and school Heads perform a short Saraswati Pooja in front of the Saraswati temple, and a teacher briefly explains that in this ceremony the first letter marks the beginning of formal learning for children in the early grades, a tradition seen across many parts of India as the start of a child’s education.
After the pooja, families are called one by one towards the gopuram area. The priest helps each child trace the first letter on a small slate, while a parent gently supports the child’s hand. There is no hurry; the focus stays on making the moment calm and clear rather than long or complicated. Around them, other parents watch quietly, some taking photos, others just observing how their child responds to this new step.
For many parents, it is a reassuring sight: early education here begins not with pressure, but with calm, presence and shared responsibility between home and school. They leave feeling that their child’s journey into formal learning has started on steady, thoughtful ground.
